Since his retirement from Hancock College in 1988, Bill Shinn has become internationally recognized both in Painting and Ceramics. He has had over 40 years of art experience beginning in the late 50's at the Academy Julian and Sorbonne in Paris, France. Bill received a Bachelors Degree in Painting and a Masters Degree in Ceramics at UCLA.

Bill's ceramic images are produced combining the techniques of slab form and extrusion. Out of need, he has recently set about designing and producing new dies to accomplish his unique art. In addition, regular backpacking trips to the Sierras and desert generate a wealth of new ideas, gleaned from images created by flash flooding and glacier erosion. While the experiences are truly inspirational, Bill feels they can be a bit overwhelming when one is so filled with creative thoughts. In addition, he considers risk a necessary element in any artist's experience. Thus the adventure continues.

During his career, Shinn has traveled extensively in the USA, Europe, Japan and Russia, furthering his art experience and recognition. Shinn's experimentation with the ceramic extruder has produced many award-winning pieces. His work has recently been featured in Clay Times and Ceramics Monthly. He offers Ceramics workshops in various techniques. Some of his shows in which he has won awards include: Feats of Clay National, Lincoln, CA; Sculpture in Clay, Portland, ME; Strictly Functional, New Cumberland, PA; Contours VI & VII National, Sonora, CA; California Crafts, Sacramento, CA and Pottery X & XI, Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, CA. International shows include the 48th International Ceramic Competition in Faenza, Italy, The Fletcher Challenge Ceramic Award Competition in Auckland, New Zealand, and the World Ceramic Exposition 2001 in Korea.

Most recent shows include: Artistic Imagings In Clay, (a juried exhibition) at the Art Museum Of The Americas in Washington, D.C. - Oct. 10,2001 to Jan.5, 2002 and Tile Out Of The Box in Alexandria, VA - Oct. 10 to Nov 18, 2001.
