Luigi
Mariani
Luigi
says stone is forever lasting: a legacy to future generations. His Italian
parents never encouraged him towards an art career, feeling that there
was little money to be made in such pursuits. Yet, Lou has contributed
to varied design ideas that are incorporated into today's cars, beautiful
handmade lutes and guitars, as well as reproductions of Gothic ornaments,
and other architectural features. More »

Although
largely self taught, using his own inner talents to formulate his ideas,
he achieves beauty, balance and elegance in his pieces. He attended many
Adult Education workshops, symposiums and sculpture classes for guidance,
which combined with his drive to express himself has produced spectacular
works of art. He considers himself a realist sculptor with a flair for
stylizing.
Lou also
studied under renowned sculptor Bela Bacsi, learning the old world technique
of stone carving that reproduces a sculpture using the point method. Using
a brass, mechanical device (called in Italian), Makeneta del Punti, the
artist is able reproduce in stone the identical image of any object designed.
An apprenticeship with Bela in tool fabrication also taught him the sharpening
and tempering of iron chisels. After many months his understanding of
the grades of marble and a many other stones was also accomplished. He
mastered the fine technique of carving in rhythmical lines to connect
various points in the stone. His carving method is very disciplined and
exacting, one not all sculptors are familiar with.
