Hector Dominguez

Born in the mountains of southern Mexico, Hector Dominguez began playing with natural materials as a child in search of things to spark his imagination. His Mother, a self-taught potter, let him play with the clay as she worked, and his love of sculpture was born. In search of a job at 15, Hector met Paul Kenepech, and began his apprenticeship in sculpting with the famed artist. After two years of study, Hector was recommended to move to the United States to work in a fine arts foundry in California. More »

Later, Hector worked with foundries across the U.S., setting up and running their mold-making, casting and patina operations. By the age of 25, Hector had become a Master Patineur, expert welder and mold maker. Hector opened his own foundry, Bronze Age, in 2004, in the hopes of maintaining the purity of traditional casting methods for fellow artists and his own creations.

Hector enjoys exploring the limits of what is possible with metal. One of his most ambitious projects has been to create the famous Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman in stainless steel. The work is currently exhibited in the Eames Foundation main offices in Santa Monica. Inspired by the properties of metals, the reaction of chemicals, and the uses of the tools with which he works, Hector believes “a great part of my art is about discovery; since the art is not purely in the object of art, but in the process.”
