A series of back surgeries essentially ended my thirty
year nursing career. Prior to that, I had never sketched or painted,
but I had traveled to France, Italy and across the Sahara and had been

A little over two years ago I just showed
up at Bert Collins studio in Ojai and she introduced me to the world
of pastels. Suddenly everything looked different.
The ephemeral quality of light and color as it wraps itself around the terrain
and rises up into the sky. Pastels bring that beauty to life, that richness
of hue, to the scene you are trying to create.
Now I paint for the sheer delight of it, a remembered
moment, a particular day. I am happy for the joy they bring to others,
to see them travel off across the
United States. One even made it to France this year. Now that makes me smile.
