Dean says that finding the hidden beauty in natural objects is second
nature to him. Such beauty waits in a seemingly worthless tangle of roots
and wood that may have washed upon a beach, or lying covered with fallen

More recently, Dean chooses Northern American woods, primarily species with natural
cracks, crevices, bark inclusions, and hollow forms from distressed woods, to
create forms filled with semi precious stones and minerals for accent and diversity.
Southwestern Native American pottery has a strong influence on Mr. Carrier’s
designs.
The carefully turned closed forms, vases, and bottles
are primarily artistic accent pieces as opposed to utilitarian items.
The longevity of each piece is
enhanced with a laborious application of oils and fine wax. Mr. Carrier strives
to emphasize the natural flow and beauty of the piece.
