Growing up in the Santa Croce neighborhood
of Florence (an area rich with artisan's workshops), Davide became intrigued
with metal at an
early age. He started as an apprentice at the age of fourteen with renowned
Florentine sculptor and jeweler, Bino Bini. For five years he developed
his skills under the tutelage of this master, becoming at the age of
19 an instructor at the International School of Metal Arts in Florence.
Before establishing his own studio in 1996 Davide worked as a designer
for leading fine silver studios and received commissions by Italian fashion
houses including Gucci.
A recipient of the International Artisans Award, he is respected by his
peers for his mastery of chasing and repoussè, the fine art of
creating sculpted bas-relief designs. Using this ancient technique Davide
creates wearable and functional sculptures of sterling silver and gold
by forming both organic and contemporary shapes that incorporate texture
and volume, curve and movement, light and shadow. His love for the flora
and fauna that surrounded him as a youth in Tuscany, as well as his respect
for old-world craftsmanship is evident in all his work.
He currently exhibits his jewelry in galleries and stores
in the U.S. and abroad, and at premier art events.
Hammer in hand I coerce metal into expressing its softness
and subtlety by employing the traditional chasing and repoussè techniques.
I enjoy
the challenge of drawing expression from an otherwise cold and hard
surface. The metamorphosis from a flat sheet of metal to a tactile
sculptural
form is inspiring.
